Academics
Here at Phi Psi we pride ourselves on academic achievement and success. The #1 reason we are all here is to succeed and grow academically, and that is reflected in our grades and study habits. We require that every incoming brother accumulates at least 10 on campus study hours per week with an active member in the house. This process promotes upperclassman brothers to interact and assist new members with their studies and transition to college. Because of our extensive network of academic resources including over 10,000 study files, free textbooks, and most importantly experienced brothers in the house, our house GPA has remained in great standing and was 3.52 the previous quarter. The average all men’s GPA for UW usually sits around a 3.28 which is more than 2 tenths lower than our usual average. Phi Kappa Psi is proud of this achievement and will continue to improve in the future.
Philanthropy/Community and Campus involvement
Brothers volunteer at quarterly Special Olympics events (Flag football, track and field, etc.)
All new members are encouraged to participate in on campus organizations, particularly in leadership roles
Every quarter we hold community feeds raising money for an organization making an impact in the area
Our biggest event is a philanthropy week in the fall centered around a sorority volleyball tournament
Recently, we have raised money for various mental health organizations in memory of our brother Anthony Newsome-Moffa who sadly passed away in 2019.
Safety (mental health, confidence, and physical health)
ELEVATE encompasses the health and wellness programs and initiatives offered by the fraternity. Through connection to resources – both local and national, in-person education, online content, awareness campaigns and ongoing support, the fraternity seeks to provide members knowledge and skills to identify and address concerns facing today’s college man. The goals of the program
Expand the health and wellness education provided to undergraduate members to increase exposure and access to information and skills training
Enhance the knowledge and skills undergraduate members have to navigate and address health and wellness concerns
Reinforce the health and wellness of undergraduate members as an organizational priority congruent with the original founding purpose of Phi Kappa Psi
Programs included in ELEVATE: Alcohol skills training, awareness campaign, behind happy faces, campus resource guide, elevate the conversation, GreekLifeEdu, health and wellness chairs, ladder of risk, and the wellness wheel
Phi Psi’s love to be outside and improve our physical health and confidence as well. We have consistent trips east of Seattle to hike and get outside the house. We also have a gym inside the house for rainy days that brothers can’t make it to the IMA facility.
Cost
Because UW has invested copious amounts in their dorms, prices have increased dramatically over the past couple of years. Currently, the price for a double room in the dorms is around $3,500 not including a dining package which is $1,400 for a typical college male. This means the total cost for just rent and food in the dorms is almost $5,000. At Phi Kappa Psi, our house bill includes rent, utilities, national dues, 3 hot meals a day served fresh by our chef Patrick, and social amenities. Our house bill per quarter hovers around $4,000, which includes all the aforementioned. This means the average person saves almost $1,000 dollars PER QUARTER from switching. Some other miscellaneous costs that are reduced are academic costs--Psi has over 250 textbooks in house for most undergraduate classes easily saving you around $500 per quarter, along with free printing, Scantrons, staples, mailing, and Chegg (all of these amenities are separate costs in dorms).
In an effort to make living in Phi Psi affordable for any member, active or potential, our alumni have raised upwards of $30,000 per year dedicated to scholarships for active members as well as high school seniors planning on attending UW. These scholarships are diverse in requirements, and focuses including scholarships for; law students, summer live-in, students studying mental health and Phi Psi National involvement. In addition to providing financial assistance for any member, these scholarships incentivize not only academics but involvement in our school and community.
Career opportunities and networking
One of the best resources young undergraduates have when joining Phi Kappa Psi is a mentor and an extensive network of alumni available 24/7. New members are paired with a mentor, usually aligned with their future career goals, to ensure that they have a connection in the local community that can assist them with career readiness and job/internship opportunities. We also have monthly workshops where alumni from all different fields come to the house to network with brothers, share their stories of success, and give invaluable college and life advice. We also have an annual alumni “founders days” where all past brothers of our chapter are invited to meet the new brothers. These events are great for networking with professionals who provide really good opportunities and skills for career readiness.
